I confess not to know music business dynamics & mine fields, but for being a global liberal band European chauvinism is relatively obvious. They're making bucket of millions in the #USA (Maryland tonight, before GA & FL). Just Mustard are Irish. Twilight Sad are Scottish, as Robert's friends Chvrches.

Reeves Gabrels' "The Sacred Squall of Now" (1995) was one of those albums I loved but could not get any of my friends into when it came out. At that point, Reeves was known as the guitarist for Tin Machine, a band who to this day is inexplicably maligned by David Bowie fans, and it was before Bowie's "Outside" (a project that restored a lot of Bowie's cool cred with 1990s gen-x alt rock kids) so the timing was interesting.

The only reason the album was on my radar at all was that I had a six-degrees connection with Reeves via my brother, who is a sometime member of a long-running "rotating roster" band that Reeves was also in. Another band my brother was in also got a shout-out in this album's 'thank you' credits, and that was just about the coolest thing in the world to 21 year-old me.

Anyway, it's a very good album and worth a listen if you like Reeves' 1990s work with Bowie. Speaking of Bowie, he makes an appearance on this version of "You've Been Around," a song he recorded in a much different idiom for "Black Tie, White Noise" a couple of years earlier. Also making an inexplicable appearance on this track is Gary Oldman.

Also not to be missed from this album is his cover of "Bad Moon Rising," which I've always liked better than the original.
