A while ago I asked for reasons to keep this community running, and got no answer. Last week, I put up a notice that the site may go offline in June. Please either tell me this service is important to you, or migrate your account to another mastodon instance. You may DM me if you don't want to post publicly. I would also love to hear what other adult autistic communities you might participate in, so that I may recommend them, whether or not they are on the fediverse.

@ben standard notice is 3 months. I hadn't quite decided to give notice yet, but I probably will soon. anyway, the #refractive hashtag will continue to work, as well as the guppie group, which both function entirely independently of this mastodon instance.

As far as I can tell, this instance is virtually unused, and it hasn't seen a new account for some time. If there is any reason at all you think m.refractive.group should be kept running, please tell me.

#craiyon Okay, wanted an idea for a #scifi armor for some post civ society, but this turned out pretty neat for the deeper things it showed - I asked "create a set of #bodyarmor with #refractive abilities to #deflect bullets" and it interestingly pulled up a 3d model it made which showed some rather fascinating designs for doing such. I'm not saying this is feasible, but I am now 100% curious how well something like this would work based on dense enough materials and refractions.

After learning how to patch clothing with a repair loom, i decided to learn how to do embroidery so i can decorate my clothing. Today i put a reasonably decent sunflower on my jeans. Tomorrow - the bat symbol. @refractive #refractive

@ford i flatly refused to text people for a long time because I miss a lot of things in text-only communication and find asynchronous short-form messages tiresome (I do like email), but my SO explained to me that texting people is a non-optional social convention among people in my age group and that texting people is a way to maintain IRL friendships. thus, I have a routine where I send periodic check-in text messages to the people I care about if I have not heard from them. #refractive

We have three ways of talking to members of refractive.group.
① the hashtag #Refractive. Follow the hashtag to get the tagged posts in your home feed. These toots are not necessarily from m.refractive.group accounts.
② the "local timeline" shows public posts from m.refractive.group accounts.
And ③ to avoid public visibility, you can mention @refractive, which is a bot that will forward toots to others who follow it.

Today I am considering that #autism may just be what happens to a child who is extremely different in any of a very broad category of ways. It seems like a large piece of the diagnostic criteria hinges on early ego development. Of course, allistics only recognize the one common ego form. And ego develops at such an early stage, where kids are often objectified and burdensome, and the early social context is not, afaict, studied in detail… #refractive

i bought a clothing repair loom (like a speedweve) because my last surviving pair of an older version of safe jeans developed a hole and i found it unbearable, in a month where a pair of safe shoes died, to lose them. so, now i have a new hobby and i've been fixing clothes for my family for fun now. makes me feel like a useful engine. #actuallyautistic #refractive @refractive

→ "the typical illusion"
It's a double entendre, IE both that the thing you think of as "typical" is an illusion, and that having this illusion is pretty typical. #Refractive

Hey #Refractive, I'm just curious how many #ActuallyAutistic on the Fediverse identify as extra-perceptive, and in what way? Please reply if you like, because I could only include the four most commonly discussed in my personal limited experience. We all know the classic 5 senses are a silly simplification.

Post diagnosis #Refractive I find myself mostly reflecting on the heartache throughout my life of being excluded from the definition of "everyone". Everyone does this. Everyone thinks that. "I do it differently". I tell them how and why. Whether or not I get my point across, I virtually never see any difference in the usage of the term. I resent it. I even disbelieve it. Your "everyone" is imaginary, and your "everyone" are also a little silly and stupid. Thankfully I'm not one of them.
