i think people have a hard time imagining a society not based on control, punishment, competition, scarcity, and the threat of state violence, because those are the norms they were raised under since childhood. it frames and colors every observation a person makes. people have to remove hierarchy and aggression from their personal relationships and work spaces before they are able to imagine a new society without these things. are human beings savage beasts that must be controlled? even our understanding of animals is contorted by this world view. it may be impossible to realize a new society without committing to a change in how we do everything - eat, clothe & shelter ourselves, what we do with our shit, etc. like one of my recent songs says, "shit always runs downhill". as i am aging and losing energy for most types of direct action, i find the practice of #refusaltocomply and #disobedience to be key factors to getting out from under the boot.
