#OnThisDay, 2 Jun 1953, Queen Elizabeth II is crowned, a year after ascending the throne of Britain and the Commonwealth. She died in 2022: her 70 year reign was the longest of any British monarch, and the longest verified reign of a woman in the world.

#OnThisDay, 28 April 1730 OS*, Anna Ivanovna is crowned the Empress of the Russian Empire.

Anna was picked by the Privy Council as the next ruler as she was widowed and childless. The council imposed a set of Conditions through which they would control her. She literally tore them up, and continued her uncle Peter the Great’s modernisation.

Like many Russian rulers, men and women, she could be cruel and abuse her power.

Her foreign policy included privateering, colonising Virginia, and approving the startup of the East India Company.

#OnThisDay, 11 Jan 1055, Theodora Porphyrogenita is proclaimed sole 'emperor' of the Byzantine Empire after the death of her sister Zoë. The sisters had previously ruled the empire - the most powerful economic, cultural, and military force in Europe - together.
