I am truly curious if I'm capable of getting through a data-related presentation without invoking Latanya Sweeney's research.

"Estimating the success of in incomplete datasets":

"We find that 99.98% of Americans would be correctly re-identified in any dataset using 15 demographic attributes. Our results suggest that even heavily sampled anonymized are unlikely to satisfy the modern standards for set forth by and seriously challenge the technical and legal adequacy of the de-identification release-and-forget model."

Tentative conclusion: I’m not going to get the minimum number of photos I need to reidentify a below about a half-dozen. Once I have that few k-shot I get good results but I’m just not getting a “general model of how to tell one manta from another.”

Does of from devices give us a false sense of ? A

"This systematic review seeks to investigate whether deidentifying data from wearable devices is sufficient to protect the privacy of individuals in datasets. Correct identification rates were typically 86–100%, indicating a high risk of . As little as 1–300 s of recording were required to enable reidentification."

Rethinking how to promote research advances through data sharing & also prevent privacy loss:

* Risk of not sharing data might exceed risk (bit.ly/3YeKly0)
* Federated learning, differential privacy, synthetic data
* Research is needed to guide policy
