Pitch rejections and play submission rejections are to be expected, however when the editor or reviewer take the time to personalise the response it doesn't seem to wound as much.

Emails to 'undisclosed recipients' starting "Dear Writer/Playwright/Applicant" always leave a bitter taste.

When I receive an email starting, "Dear Marjorie ..." with relevant details of my application, I feel seen, and encouraged even though unsuccessful this time.

I imagine how insufferable I would have been had my 11-year-old self been published...sure, she would have had a sense of self-worth and have taken a totally different path in life, but oh! the insufferableness!
