uiiiii - jetzt wo ich ein paar #relays eingetragen habe hier bei mir auf dieser #instanz - ist meine föderierte #timeline tausendmal grösser...
bin gspannt wann mein #speicherplatz ausgeht
als ich das experiment bei meinem #linode server machte, hatte ich am schluss 10gb datenmüll pro tag mehr aufm server... #kicher

Do you like #FediBuzz and would love for it to continue? I know, I'm in the same camp as you.
@astro made it possible for you to donate a token, and the page says
> We consume only the federated timeline. We don't even see boosts or replies. The permissions that we request shouldn't allow us to do anything else.
Unfortunately, that's misleading. I agree that the permissions “shouldn't allow them to do anything else", but the reality is that today, they do.
The token you're donating can read the private messages of the user that created the token.
So if you do so, make sure you trust @astro with access to your private messages and their ability to keep your token secure or create a token from an account where you don't have private messages.
If you regret donating the token, you can revoke it at /oauth/authorized_applications
I don't like the way #Mastodon devs are downplaying the importance that #FediBuzz has on small instances... but asking for tokens that can read private messages without disclosing it is wrong. And considering that the people that are aware of it are mostly admins, means that it's more likely they will have important messages on their accounts.

Ok, so it seems that Mastodon is removing support for relays.
This will hurt small instances (like my own), because relays are how I get reach.
🙁
I am SO sick of getting cozy with a #Socialmedia site/platform and them do something shady, making me want to leave. I was so hopeful that #Mastodon was the end of this, but now I'm starting to think otherwise, the changes being made to the code is not very "new" instance friendly. Removing #relays is quite a dick move...😡

Ok, #Mastodon #Relays are expensive, but Mastodon itself also becomes too dry without any, where the other alternative is to give up and join a public server.
For the minimal cost, there should be no relays at all apparently.
Perhaps the code needs to be adjusted to give more options on the cache control for the future, especially if this Zuckverse becomes a thing.
Single relay I've added is: https://relay.infosec.exchange/inbox
Retention periods:
Media cache: 2
Content cache: 5
User archive: 7

#Relays have been powering telecom for decades. Messaging is a foundational topic for Sovereign networks. We have many transport protocols like a #didcomm #iden3comm, but we still need an end-to-end solution with permission and persistence in place. Decentralized Web Nodes #DWN offers a relay-based network topology with persistence. The same topology was proposed by #noster. So why #relays are so important?

#Mastotips of the day for the new #Mastodon #Admin out there!
Have the need to be federated but the relays fill your server with a bunch of crap that's irrelevant to your interests? Fine tune your own #relays with https://relay.fedi.buzz
You can "create" your own relay from #hashtags or specific #instances!

Does anyone know of any good #relays for small #fediverse servers? Preferably focusing on English speaking users and tech.
Now that I have my #mastodon instance up and running I have some thoughts: overall, it was straightforward except for the things I bunged up during setup. I've setup a few #relays to help get #federation going but things like trending posts won't work with a single user instance. Kinda limits #discovery 🤷🏼♂️

The ability to only fetch media from relays when needed by a client would be really great.
Much less data to fetch and process by the server, saving network bandwidth, processing power, storage space and wear level on SSDs.

A repository has been created that displays running #tor #relays available in #Russia. Available = not blocked yet.
The repository is updated twice a day.

I removed Toot Works from the BigRelay due to the discovery of this Copyright and Intellectual Property TOS. This is a bridge too far, IMO.

When I first created Toot Works :toot_works_girl:, I tried adding a bunch of relays and the storage needs very quickly hocky-sticked. After that, I gave up on the concept of relays. Two days ago, I added "The BigRelay" and so far it's only taking up ~6gb. Since Toot Works is only caching content for three days, I think that this should work in the longterm.
I've connected up to #BigRelay, and am now waiting for my instance to be drowned into permanent silence by a torrent of posts.
Or it'll be fine.

@BenjaminNelan I think it's only useful when you have access to the Administration of your instance, where you can add #relays. And it works for me, since I am on an island :) @Ralnik
Oooooo, new Tim Hunkin "Secret Life of Components" on YouTube.
Really enjoy his videos, I'm generally familiar with relevant theory and practical use of the components. But his breakdowns and explanations are really good, and his practical use examples fun and often ingenious.

Es gibt einige Listen mit #relays Servern. Vor- und Nachteile überblicke ich noch nicht...
