"In February, a coalition of consumer advocate groups… ask[ed] the agency to use existing federal laws to 'rein in widespread harmful behavior' by the industry, citing companies like …& …as 'occupying the top of the personal-data food chain' and in need of stricter oversight."

@arthurgessler @openwarfare @t_mkdf it's actually even worse than that. Because, in the course of this publishing business have also built a huge database of active scientists, which they then *also* sell to governments, universities, research councils etc for assessing grants and promotions etc.

Anecdote on this piece from @openwarfare : Dutch amily member bought shares in Shell and Elsevier (now ) at roughly the same time many years ago.

The shares made a 43% return on Shell, a company dedicated to extracting oil and gas, and 137% on academic publisher Elsevier. 😱🫣😶‍🌫️

*THAT* is how valuable our academic labour (and presumably taxpayer money paying universities and research councils etc) is...

Elsevier and its parent company provide the fossil industry with data services such as Geofacets and Knovel, used by major oil, gas, and coal companies. Thanks to Elsevier, “exploration has never been more seamless” 4/n youtube.com/watch?v=IaWU_4tBPr

It looks like all NeuroImage editors have resigned over Elsevier's unwillingness to lower their APC. They're working with MIT Press to make a new journal called Imaging Neuroscience with an APC as low as possible, hopefully less than half of what Elsevier currently charges.

Honestly, good for them.

I loved the quiet admission that they were getting into personal medical surveillance, as was obvious they were going to do.

I used to conceptualize corporations as just being gigantic haunted piles of money that had their own logic independent of the people that ran them with the singular goal of growing bigger, but under , they're more like gigantic haunted graphs of data.

Reading Data Cartels by Sarah Lamdan is an eye opener to a problem I already knew about. We all knew about. And yet, we knew nothing about at the same time. It makes you wonder why so many state governors are so anti when US companies are currently mining data just as well, and just as dangerously.

@erinnacland @eikofried @academicchatter From what I understand, it is the broader parent company that has transitioned to data analytics/digital surveillance. RELX includes not just Elsevier but also LexisNexis, big in legal publishing. See for example wired.com/story/big-informatio and media.dlib.indiana.edu/media_o (which I’ve skimmed watched :) )

One reason among many for academics and research funding agencies to support

If you look, you'll notice that the GAFAM of curated information like follows the same path. Interconnections with the security industry, with the fossil industries, campaign donations to climate change deniers, permanent lobbying in Brussels and elsewhere - bad prerequisites to take money and claim independence.

@heroicendeavour It was a strange event. People talked about something that no longer exists - is no longer a , but a division in the data cartel - whole areas of the problem, such as third parties, were not named. Best of all was Max von Grafenstein's statement: publishers are now where and were 10 years ago, and we can see where that would lead without regulation. Recommended reading:
