We look back at November. Two stories for Rememberance Day, one is a personal account that may elicit a tear or two, the other a story of a milk run in post war Germany. Next are the Irish culture in Liverpool. and the closure of the Turkish Baths in Carlisle.

He was part of a small mobile radar unit. After his training in Wales, he was stationed in North Africa, took part in the invasion of Sicily (1943), had deployments in Corsica & Yugoslavia and witnessed the end of the war in Venice "over a cappuccino," as he put it. In 1945 he was stationed first in Palestine and then in Iraq. In late 1946 he returned home, Essex, England. #remember #rememberance #rememberanceday

”When the War is over and the sword at last we sheathe,
I'm going to keep a jelly-fish and listen to it breathe.
When the War is over and we've finished up the show,
I'm going to plant a lemon-pip and listen to it grow." ~A.A.Milne #RememberanceDay

'Suicide in the Trenches' by Siegfried Sassoon is a haunting poem about the realities of war. A useful antidote to the nationalism and militarism pushed on us during #RememberanceDay

Gravestones are German, from the early parts of the war. Canadian troops preserved them upon capturing the hill.

Good morning my fiends. I hope the rain holds off for the many services today remembering the sacrifice of those who fought fascism. It is deeply disturbing that today so many today would stomp on this profound sacrifice made by our own parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
We remember. Never again!
Safe travels as you roll and don't forget to take time today to be grateful for the gift they gave.

No one has to tell me why #RememberanceDay is important. 3 generations of my family served/ are currently serving in the military: 2 in the British forces + 1 in the Canadian. I always think of them + all the things they have done this time of year.
Went and saw our child help lay the wreaths for #RememberanceDay - very moving. I am mostly a #pacifist but do want to remember and respect all who died in wars.
I also think of my grandfather, who preached against the #nazis and died in #Dachau concentration camp: https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kornelis_Sietsma (Dutch language page) - an amazing example of standing against evil people, no matter the risk.

This is my Grandad Michael Gibbons. He survived the battle of the #Somme and was part of a RE Tunnelling company...digging trenches and Tunnelling under the enemy lines. Unfortunately I never knew him, but I'm remembering him today.

This #rememberanceday all the politicians will be wrapping themselves in the flag and urging people to remember the sacrifices people made for the country. None of them will be saying that maybe these sacrifices would be unnecessary if we dismantled the toxic #capitalist system which drives violence. A better world is possible.
