He was part of a small mobile radar unit. After his training in Wales, he was stationed in North Africa, took part in the invasion of Sicily (1943), had deployments in Corsica & Yugoslavia and witnessed the end of the war in Venice "over a cappuccino," as he put it. In 1945 he was stationed first in Palestine and then in Iraq. In late 1946 he returned home, Essex, England. #remember #rememberance #rememberanceday

Good morning my fiends. I hope the rain holds off for the many services today remembering the sacrifice of those who fought fascism. It is deeply disturbing that today so many today would stomp on this profound sacrifice made by our own parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

No one has to tell me why #RememberanceDay is important. 3 generations of my family served/ are currently serving in the military: 2 in the British forces + 1 in the Canadian. I always think of them + all the things they have done this time of year.

Went and saw our child help lay the wreaths for #RememberanceDay - very moving. I am mostly a #pacifist but do want to remember and respect all who died in wars.
I also think of my grandfather, who preached against the #nazis and died in #Dachau concentration camp: https://nl.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kornelis_Sietsma (Dutch language page) - an amazing example of standing against evil people, no matter the risk.

This is my Grandad Michael Gibbons. He survived the battle of the #Somme and was part of a RE Tunnelling company...digging trenches and Tunnelling under the enemy lines. Unfortunately I never knew him, but I'm remembering him today.

This #rememberanceday all the politicians will be wrapping themselves in the flag and urging people to remember the sacrifices people made for the country. None of them will be saying that maybe these sacrifices would be unnecessary if we dismantled the toxic #capitalist system which drives violence. A better world is possible.
