"Her nude paintings were unprecedented in the 1500s – and, as a new exhibition at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin next month makes clear, this Renaissance artist could be every bit as outrageous and licentious as the boys.
Lavinia Fontana’s nudes were so unprecedented that experts argue about how she even got access to models. For a woman to be an artist in the 1500s was rare, for her to work with naked models unheard of." #art #LaviniaFontana #Renaissance #RenaissanceArt #Women #1500s #NudeArt #artist

"The Game of Chess," Sophonisba Anguissola, 1555.
Anguissola painted this portrait of her three sisters & a servant when she was only 23. They were an upper-class family, as evidenced by their rich attire & the presence of a chessboard, at the time a hobby only for the nobility. Anguissola went on to be a noted portraitist, & was a court painter to Philip II of Spain.
From the National Museum in Poznan, Poland.

Russia wanted to send Ukraine back to Middle Ages, but prompted a Renaissance.
I took this photo by accident. It was my blackout morning: with candle light and without blow dry.

8. This thread only scratches the surface. You can find so much more in this portrait. The National Gallery channel on youtube has some great breakdowns of this portrait and the Closer to Van Eyck site has a Macro photo of this piece where you can zoom in and see all the details that I spoke of as well as an xray of the underlying sketch. Thread 1. I never truly appreciated art or artists. I never fully appreciated the historical significance of portrait painting either, until I saw this one. When I traveled to London I made a point to stop at the National Gallery and look at it in person. Not even 5 years ago I would have walked right by if I even set foot in there. I will try to explain why this particular piece fascinates me. Please be patient as I am not a historian. #art #RenaissanceArt #vaneyck #HistoricalArt #ArtHistory

I went to the art museum this week and now I have even MORE sewing projects I want to do 🫣 Renaissance isn't even my favorite period but those Annunciation paintings make me want to dress as both Gabriel (with the rainbow wings) and the Madonna (I am not even Catholic)?

Jan Van Eyck self portrait (1433). This painting is one of the few Van Eyck portraits in its original frame. He signs and dates it, using a pun on his own name "Als Ich Can" meaning As I Can. On his head is a Chaperon, a common headdress at the time. He ties it up, however, in an unorthodox way, possibly to show off his skill at painting shadows and contours in red. #art #artist #artwork #London #NationalGallery #painting #RenaissanceArt
