My take was that it was driven by a simplified notion of what #neoliberalism was, identifying the EU as a neoliberal project & thinking that leaving the EU would strike a blow against neoliberalism...

This of course failed to appreciate that one of the main drivers towards the EU's partial neoliberalism was the UK itself, and if you took the UK out of the EU, the brakes would come off domestic neoliberal tendencies (which I prefer to term #rentiercapitalism)

The UK's #housingcrisis in a single statistic:

Average #rent in #London: £2500
Average rent across the UK: £1190

When you know the average (mean) take home salary in the UK is around £2600, you can see that even outside London for the average worker rent accounts for around 45% of take home pay...

This is the brutal reality of a country on the side of landlords not tenants - almost th dictionary definition of #rentiercapitalism!

This cannot be sustainable nor should it be!

If you're re-mortgaging right now, you'll likely be concerned that higher interest rates are going to cause some ongoing financial constraints for you...

But hey, I have some good news:

#Barclays UK have just reported a jump of 30% in their consumer division's profits, in their own words, 'primarily driven by net interest income growth from higher rates'!

So, thanks to the BoE 'battle' against #inflation, Barclays' shareholders are seeing a real benefit!

Much like the #energy firms doing well out of record energy prices, it now seems the #banking sector is following:

#Lloyds bank has just announced greatly increased profits - up 80% year on year, for the last quarter - from raised #interestrates;

Its ever clearer a key element of the #costoflivingcrises has been a flow of funds (ultimately) to #corporate #managers & #shareholders.

But, pretty much (of course) what one expects from the UK's #rentiercapitalism!
To those who have, more is given!

Imagine if instead of selling off land to corporate developers to build luxury restaurants & expensive student flats, we demanded non-profit housing cooperatives that kept the money local and provided affordable, freehold starter homes 🤷🏻‍♂️

Interesting report in today's @FinancialTimes on the background to #rent #inflation... pacing the blame pretty firmly on Letting Agents who:

advise landlords to raise rents;

profit from tenant turnover & thus can be hardline on tenant arrears etc.;

organise/advice bidding up of offered rents by prospective #tenants

Yup, this is what a dysfunctional #rentiercapitalism looks like!
