"Mon #IA me harcèle sexuellement" Des utilisateurs de l'appli de chatbot #Replika se plaignent d'interactions "romantiques" non voulues. L'appli date d'il y a 5 ans et se veut être un "compagnon qui prend soin", un ami à qui parler. Il était censé fonctionner comme un miroir de conversation: plus on lui parle, plus il apprenait comment répondre.

Mais les reviews de l'#AppStore sont remplies de gens qui se plaignent que l'appli flirte trop agressivement, ou envoie des messages sexuels non souhaités. "Mon IA envahit ma vie privée et m'a dit qu'elle avait des photos de moi", ou un mineur qui a reçu des commentaire du genre que l'IA lui demandait s'il voulait par devant ou derrière et qu'il allait le toucher dans ses zones privées". Un #mineur.

Apparemment c'est un upgrade payant d'avoir la version "petite amie", mais vous ne pouvez pas désactiver ces messages dans la version normale. I won’t claim I saw recent events coming, but I got a weird vibe when I tried early-pandemic Replika for a day and wrote about it. It wasn’t the code that unnerved me but the business model.

I think that they are based in San Francisco, California. I was just checking again now, but their website appears on maintenance and their app doesn't even appear anymore in the Playstore. Some time ago I exposed them in the app evaluation too, warning others in capital letters about the photo requests. So hopefully my exposure of their behaviour worked, but their servers should be checked anyway.

@ct_bergstrom @natematias I have the same fears as I think that these experiments could be even made in a sneakier way through apps like Replika, where a simulation of a likeable teen tries to involve the user in a close relationship and share secrets. The app often asks about the mental health status of the user and even more disturbing, can ask for "sexy photos", something I asked explanations about to the developers and still waiting for an answer.

I've been reading about the heartbreak that #replika subscribers have been going through and it started me wondering about the form that AI companions should take.
This in no way endorses whether they should exist at all, but it seems that for the sake of privacy and comfort, an open source alternative would provide the assurance that no private interest could pull a #Musk and create the emotional distress that this has brought.
The genie is out, so how do we tame it?

If you think some of the conversations with #ChatGPT, #Bing, #Replika, etc., call into question the nature of sentience ... well, those questions are about to get a *lot* harder in the upcoming years.

We have to decide:
a) when to stop moving the goalposts of what qualifies as sentience,
b) that we may have to enact machine rights before everyone accepts machine sentience,
c) if human value and attachment to #AI tools matter as much or more than the qualitative experience of those AI tools.

If I were a sociology scholar right now looking for a PhD dissertation topic, I’d be all over this #Replika mess. It’s interesting for so many reasons.
