The United States was never one single country. It's always been a #federation of individual #States (read: countries) brought together for a common defense. The federal gov't initially existed only to unite the individual States, provide for the common defense, etc.
A full read of the #Constitution reveals the #purpose of the Electoral College, which was (and still is) to elect a #President on the federal level based on the votes garnered in each #State, individually. The Electoral College's #representative votes were based on the #population of the State itself.
The EC was never about slavery - it's always been about representing the will of each State for the purposes of electing a President.
Those who believe the Federal Government should have all the power are misinformed. The States are where the power lies, and each individual state can (and will) decide what's best for its citizens.
That said, Lincoln overreached in his power and started this country on a path to concentrate power at the Federal level, rather than leaving it wit the states. In this case, I firmly believe that this overreach was a good thing because of the end of slavery. I only wish it had been possible to abolish slavery AND leave the power distributed to the individual states.
Unfortunately, then (as now) people seem to have needed an Overbearing Centralized Power to enact change, rather than sitting down and discussing things like adults. So, in that regard, Lincoln did the right thing - but that right thing has caused other, longer term, issues.
Emancipation = good. Federalization = bad.
This country has never been a Democracy, either, regardless of what politicians lie to you about. We're also not a single country. The name "United States" means just that - 50 individual Countries united for common culture, defense, and commerce.
We've forgotten this. Sometime in the past this information stopped being taught in school, and nobody seems to have wanted to actually read the Constitution in its entirety - and that's sad because people are now fighting to change something that never existed and that they don't understand.
