One of the things I have found through my experience reading and writing - is that authors, in their passion about a topic, often forget to bring the reader along. They don't meet their audience where they are at - and THEN whisk them off to the research destination they are so excited to explore. They jump into a story midway - challenging the reader to struggle through acronyms, intuit what problem they are solving, or guess at how they plan to measure success.
A set of questions I used to evaluate research proposals 20 years ago is still one of my most often referenced "cheat sheets" I share with technical authors.
"The Heilmeier Catechism" - A few questions that, when answered, make for excellent proposals or presentations.
* What are you trying to do? Articulate your objectives using absolutely no jargon.
* How is it done today, and what are the limits of current practice?
* What is new in your approach and why do you think it will be successful?
* Who cares? If you are successful, what difference will it make?
* What are the risks?
* How much will it cost?
* How long will it take?
* What are the mid-term and final “exams” to check for success?
