"They were children in the 1950s when they saw unidentified workers spraying a substance into the air that created a fog-like mist around the buildings and common spaces" ... they assumed it was the then-usual mosquito control, but no, it was part of a secret experiment. "Zinc cadmium sulfide also differed from DDT in that it had radiological properties."

This is wrong on so many levels, even if (as claimed) no direct injury resulted.

This is an important and timely article on conducting research ethically and collaboratively with Indigenous peoples, in the context of microbiome research but relevant in much wider contexts.

Trials for Alzheimer's drugs missing out on a lot of human variation: nature.com/articles/d41586-023 (at the very least, companies are neglecting what might be a very large market segment) But when one segment of the population is at a higher risk, shouldn't research be focusing on that segment to generate the maximum benefit to society?

Did small-brained ancient people bury their dead?

The archaeology team say yes, and that is shown in a Netflix documentary.

The peer reviewed science says that the evidence isn't there.

This article covers the story, including how a new peer review process might not work as well as intended.

So there's a clickbait title (it got me!) but what I found more interesting is the story of how a Harvard team didn't wait for their research to be permitted by PNG authorities.

US human-subjects researchers: participant gender-related info is now extra sensitive.

Last summer I posted (linked below) about my (successful) quest for confidentiality guarantees from , and how we changed our screening questions to have pregnancy in an "any of the above" list, rather than separately.

Unfortunately, we now need to treat some gender and relationship-related data with the same heightened caution.

I asked the IT folks if there were plans to implement , as we have sensitive human research data stored in box.

IT replied that there are currently no plans to enable the , and that no changes would be made that violate compliance. I asked that they update their guidance accordingly, but have not seen it yet.

I suspect this is only the very start of -related human-subjects research issues.

Should we have methods review before a research study starts, asks @lakens?

We could have equivalents to committees to do this. Other solutions include Registered Reports.

Objections: not necessary, redundant, attacks academic freedom.
