Today we remember the great Roberto Clemente, as 12/31/22 marks exactly 50 years since his tragic, untimely, and heroic passing.
The old Three Rivers scoreboard memorializes The Great One the following day, in this old AP photo.
Not just The Great One...The Greatest!

I always talk too much & run outta room when it's about ⚾️! Can't help it!
I also want to say that THIS SATURDAY will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of #RobertoClemente - his plane crashed while trying 2 get supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua - on Dec. 31, 1972.
I hope u all will take a moment 2 acknowledge #THEGREATONE as I do each yr (my mom grew up watching him in Pittsburgh so its tradition)! He was a GREAT human both on & off the field!

To add to @DocTellMeMore 's post below listing his on-field accomplishments (of which there could've been more! His final hit on 9/30/72 was his 3000th) I'd like to add he was/is the greatest #humanitarian in MLB history (maybe one of the greatest in world history, imho). He was the 1st Latin player in the HOF & his number should be universally retired alongside 42. I hate Manfred for a billion reasons (so much he makes me miss Bud! Yikes!) but this is 1 of them #Retire21 #BaseballMastadon #mlb

Like the author of the piece, here I am not objective.
Nor do I pretend to be. The truth is that I don't see how it is possible to know who Roberto Clemente was, be it as a player, as a Puerto Rican, or as a person, and not be his supporter.
It's time. #Retire21
#Retire21

@Padres All the (currently-not-suspended) Puerto Ricans on the :astros: are wearing it as well, and I think it's a thing on several other teams.
It's so gratifying to see Clemente finally getting the admiration he deserves, because in spite of the fact that we all know his name and how great he was at baseball and at life, he *still* somehow feels underrated as a player and as a person. #retire21
