A new #preprint on metadata analysis and content analysis of retraction notices in the arts and humanities:
The authors write that "many #retraction notices are neither identifiable nor findable". It's good that this is being talked about loudly - we need science we can trust.
A quotation from Joubert, Joseph:
«««««
Those who never retract their opinions love themselves more than they love truth.
[Ceux qui ne se rétractent jamais s’aiment phis que la vérité.]

Just realized that the #Altmetric score of a paper keeps on going up when people/journalists tweet/write about its #retraction :blobfacepalm:

A concerning post-publication exercise (which led the original flawed publication to #retraction) on how easy is for our "intuition" of #ComputationalModelling to deceive ourselves and others.
Here, "others" seem to include editors and some reviewers (whose expertise maybe was not directly in modelling) of a respected journal. Besides readers who also cited the flawed work and propagated the flaw.

@CaulfieldTim ...by the way, the DOI of the #retraction has *not* been activated, although the retraction dates back from 12th May.
And #Google Scholar is unaware of the retraction.
...not a conspiracy, but quite likely a limited willingness to advertise retractions in general.

Often referenced "masks do harm" study retracted.
See: https://frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpubh.2023.1221666/full
Editors: "...complaints were valid ... the article does not meet the standards of editorial & scientific soundness..."
Will likely live on as a zombie & the retraction will become part of a conspiracy narrative.

BMC Infectious Diseases has retracted the garbage-tier paper that claimed the COVID-19 vaccines might have killed over 250,000 people in the United States.
Post-publication review found that there was no attempt to validate survey-reported fatality data and that the methodology was inappropriate for proving causal inference of mortality. The paper also falsely claimed that the study had IRB approval when in reality it was exempt from such oversight.

Shoutout to speakers Jodi Schneider (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) & @tac_NISO for yesterday’s discussion of CREC, the Recommended Practice for communicating #retraction and removal information! If you missed it, check out the recording here: https://www.niso.org/events/2023/04/opentelecon-crec
The recommendations for reducing the inadvertent spread of retracted science:
:doi: https://doi.org/10.1186/s41073-022-00125-x
It will be interesting to see if these recommendations have had any positive effect on reducing the citation of retracted papers in the future.

A tale of scientific misconduct from the team at Retractable Watch. A University of Sydney scientist seems to badly fake an image in a paper, and the coauthor seems not to notice. Hmm..

Ob-gyn loses PhD after committee finds he made up #research
👉 "According to an investigation by the Vrije Universeit Brussel (#VUB), which awarded Abu Hashim his PhD in 2013, the researcher was in “serious violation of scientific #integrity” based on “overwhelming evidence of fabrication of statistical outcomes” and “clear lack of statistical proficiency.”"

Prolific #autism researcher has two dozen papers retracted
👉 An autism researcher lost two dozen papers to #retraction 8 years after the publisher was made aware of potentially troubling editorial practices. #Elsevier cited undisclosed conflicts of interest, duplicated methodology and a “compromised” #peerreview process as reasons for the #retractions.

"In May 2022, #SpringerNature retracted a paper for the first time over suspicions that some of the authorships were paid-for, after investigating a tip-off from [Anna] Abalkina. It has since retracted 11 papers in a further 5 journals over similar concerns. More investigations are under way.
“We have a zero-tolerance approach,” says [Tim] Kersjes. “It’s a matter about integrity and reliability of the public record”."
