This study analyses scientific fraud in the European Union 🇪🇺 by examining #retractions due to Falsification, Fabrication and Plagiarism (FFP):

🇩🇪 is first in the European ranking for FFP, 🇳🇱 in the ranking for FF, and 🇮🇹 in that for #Plagiarism.
Peer review can't work if editors ignore the advice of their reviewers.

Many retracted articles are cited without acknowledging the retraction, notes Ivan Oransky. The Retraction Watch database is linked to many literature databases - you can get alerts to avoid getting caught out.

A major reason for a rise in #Retractions is post-publication #PeerReview, especially in @PubPeer notes @ivanoransky
Sleuths look for anomalies in figures, text, statistics, and data.

Much misconduct, especially paper mills, is driven by perverse incentives to publish, created by governments - but this is enabled by publishers discussing Impact Factors, citation numbers, and rankings, argues @ivanoransky

Many of the common reasons for #retractions are misconduct, says @ivanoransky
Some are detected better than before, e.g. image manipulation/duplication, redundant publication, & plagiarism; some are rising, e.g., fake #PeerReview & #PaperMills.
#retractions #peerreview #PaperMills #ukrioevents #PublicationEthics
Why are #retractions rising, asks @ivanoransky?
Two main possibilities:
1. More misconduct, which makes up 2/3 of reasons for retraction;
2. Better detection, by sleuths and journals.

The godfather of retractions, the top dog of watchdogs, Dr. @ivanoransky himself, is our afternoon keynote speaker.
#Retractions are rising, but not enough. About 1/1000 publications are retracted, with a lag. 40,000 total are in the @retractionwatch database. #UKRIOevents

This paper makes an attempt to improve guidelines that editors could consider when faced with the dilemma of whether to issue an expression of concern (EoC), or not:
:doi: https://doi.org/10.1080/08989621.2023.2206021
At present, the lack of clear #guidelines leads to the authors citing articles whose integrity is under inquiry, calling into question their own work; there are no clear links between EoC n the outgoing document; the announcement of the EoC can hang unchanged for years, etc.

Our new short study for the special issue of JDIS on the fight against academic #misconduct. We have analyzed 23 retractions in the CB&R journal associated with "paper mills":
These #retractions have already accumulated almost 3 hundred #citations according to WoS, and let me remind you that, for example, according to the 🇺🇦 #evaluation system, these papers and citations are Ok, and their authors deserve research grants, bonuses, lifetime allowances...
