Beautiful day out on the slopes of Mt Darriwill and the Werribee River #escarpment planting trees, shrubs and grassland species for the Grow West #Revegetation project. These landscapes have been heavily grazed sheep pasture for nearly 200 years but despite the decimated biodiversity the #landscape retains its beauty (as long as the scoria pit on the side of the hill doesn't reopen and gobble it up grrr)

#Spiraea douglasii is in the #RoseFamily native to western North America AKA #hardhack & #DouglasSpirea & #Steeplebush & #RoseSpirea

#Indigenous #FirstPeoples used this #plant to make brooms & to hang seafood to cook.
It's used in #riparian #revegetation projects for hardiness/quick growth.

Walking past a community #Revegetation site this morning I started to feel dismayed at the mat of #weeds coming up among the planting... then I noticed a fair part of that mat is seedlings of Senecio quadridentatus and Linum marginale that we planted there. w00t!

From mown grass paddock, to planted rows, to raging torrent of water and a loss of plants, to a beginning of a canopy after 1.5 years.

*Commersonia bartramia* feature as the main pioneer in this riparian revegetation site which will be used as managed shade and biomass for the mixed species planting they protect underneath them. Eventually some of the species will be thinned leaving the best performers at a spacing that suits the final goal of complete canopy cover and wild understory which is common of subtropical vegetation in this location.

As the site matures, shade-loving species will be added as I can propagate them. Plus more Lomandra, you can never have enough.

Yesterday was spent with the Traltjraak #IndigenousRangers amongst the beautiful salmon gums (Eucalyptus salmonophloia) collecting 2kg of seed from native trees as part of a large-scale #ZeroCarbon #revegetation project to restore paddocks to bush land. The Promised Land #swimming hole near Bellingen records #faecal contamination of water. The #PromisedLand, near #Bellingen on the NSW Mid North Coast, was so well loved recently that the local council advised swimmers to stay out of the #NeverNever #River that ran through it. There are no public toilets, no rubbish bins, and minimal parking. But that hasn't stopped thousands of people from visiting the scenic swimming spot. There is an increase in litter in the region and damage to some #revegetation areas where people had parked inappropriately.
