Things I might want to do to poke some boogers: break on network comm calls in a debugger, what’s the best debugging combo for binaries without symbols and wine ? #reverseEngineering
I want to peek poke in a windows exe and see if I can find some boogers. I last did that 15 years ago with ida pro, what do the cool kids use these days? I’m on Linux, if that matters. Besides the exe, interested in decoding a binary protocol. I’m pretty sure chatgpt will slay for that, but are there some cool tools I can look at there too? Always rolled my own.

Is there a specific hashtag for silicon #reverseEngineering? I've been using #ICRE, but is there another? #SiliconReverseEngineering or #ICReverseEnginering maybe?

Comparison of Brightfield versus DIC illumination, Motorola 68HC05 microprocessor.
The quality here is fairly poor; my light source polariser is a piece of cheap polarising film clipped into a 3D-printed frame.
I need to find somewhere that sells good quality ~18 to ~22mm glass polarizers.

You'd think people have better things to do with their talents.
I prefer making things that help people, rather than wasting my time tearing down other people's work.
Call me old fashioned, but I don't need to help humanity go extinct.

While I totally agree (from my own work experience included) that encrypting firmware is essential, as well as having such guide... IMO I'd like to stress without diversifying encryption keys and making it unique per each device there's not much to gain from it https://interrupt.memfault.com/blog/firmware-encryption-with-python

Today progress on the Lectures Enjeu #ReverseEngineering :
- Decoding the list of objects, added object names to the debugger
- Decoded the INIT file header by comparing the content for all games (it is mainly GUI layout, I confirmed this by patching one of the games to change the main window colors and size)
- Continuing to tweak the interpreter and trying to really make sense of the opcodes. I should try other games now, some crash immediately and some don't go past the first screen

I would be glad about every debugging tip!😅

This is starting to look like something...
- Added the "global" buttons that are always available at the bottom (in this case health and inventory) but did not completely wire them yet
- Made the disassembler show its result in the Debugger window instead of the console, and highlight the last run line. I have to cleanup the variables dumps and highlight changed and maybe tested variables. Is a step by step run mode necessary?

This is going to be a game-changer when it gets to civilian hands.
