@landwehr_c I feel like my papers have had the #Reviewer2 treatment from Reviewer 1, 2 or 3! The meme in my field is Reviewer 3 being the worst. I heard an explanation that Rev3 was the last to turn in their review and, having been hassled, were more grumpy. But I think there is a large random element here.
I'm currently writing my first review for a major grant application and I'm afraid I turn out to be reviewer 2. I especially dislike having to review the person of the PI.
How can I be critical without turning into reviewer 2? Any advice?

Supervisors have often themselves not been well trained, notes Petra Boynton.
Suffering is seen as a 'badge of honour' in #ResearchCulture - overwork, exhaustion, competition, uncertainty. Meme culture of #PhDchat: need coffee, lack of sleep, #Reviewer2 is out to get me!

First recorded sub-tweet to #Reviewer2
From Hans Sloane, A Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica (London: 1707), “The Preface”
Me: "so the reviewers wanted us to tone down the relentless focus on overall efficiency a bit, but that's an easy fix. Decent reviews."
Co-author: "#Reviewer2 is a communist."
Reviewing an article I found problematic and trying really hard to be supportive and not full #Reviewer2 mode. It's a struggle! #AcademicChatter
the last time i submitted a paper like this i got a review that said "why are you using triangle brackets? we use triangle brackets for orthographic representations"
...reader, I was using the triangle bracket for an orthographic representation & explained as much in the introduction #reviewer2 #linguistics #languagedocumentation

Peer reviewers can be hard. But sometimes they provide you with great inspirational quotes 😆 #AcademicTwitter #Reviewer2 #Postdocs

But I’d just finished grad school and had to explain just how much less brutal it is to have a bunch of randos on a crafting forum hate your thing than it is to pour your heart into research and then have famous academics stomp it down in reviews #reviewer2
#reviewer2 do you get this??? English native speaking people please confirm (or not)

Pleasure as always working with Pierre Ankomah, a rising star in the ID world whom I'm fortunate to have as a postdoc in my lab, & w my MGH ID colleague Mark Siedner on this. Thanks to reviewers for valuable input, and to editors for allowing us extra time to respond to #Reviewer2 and (imo) greatly strengthen our analysis, and for picking it as an Editor's Choice article.
And thanks for reading this thread. Any feedback on the paper, or on this approach to Mastodon threading, most welcome.

Reviewer 1 liked it, but #Reviewer2 was unconvinced. In a mildly scathing review, they insisted that detected infections suck as a measure of pop immunity. Which is inarguable, but hard to fix.
Pierre kicked into high gear: he cross-tabulated seroprevalence from two sources by state (non-trivial, given poor public data), computed a "correction factor" for case underdetermination for each state, and factored in VE estimates for infxn, vax, & boost vs each variant, which by then were published
This is a friendly reminder (to myself) that #peerreview doesn't necessarily mean smart review or helpful review, especially when #reviewer2 takes action 🙄
#reviewer2 gets a lot of flak, but I just received the most incredible 6-page(!) PDF with thoughtful and elaborate comments about how to improve a manuscript submitted to an OA journal. Some people go above and beyond. 🙏

@publius @timnitGebru i would have cited Zevon (1978) ("Lawyers, Guns and Money") ; even though Miller, S. et al. (1976) ("Take the Money and Run") were first to publish, they incorrectly identified both problem and solution. #reviewer2
