(2) revolts in Marseille - started 29th June at a protest organised against police violence across France - speeches were interrupted within 20 mins due to police using tear gas and flashballs. The revolts in Marseille lasted until Sunday - often to the early hours of morning - with Marseille police getting back up from police elsewhere. Mainly CRS (riot police) with Bac (mainly undercover police) arresting. I witnessed two 12 year olds being beaten up on Friday 30th June - eventually released after one of them escaped with his father. And the other we found and took partly home was limping due to being hit by CRS. This was not a rarity - average of those arrested during the revolts across France was 17 years old. Many did not refuse a direct rapid hearing meaning their cases took place Monday 3rd July in Marseille - taken straight from police stations to the courts. In Paris the court hearing started as early as the weekend 1st July-2nd July. Over 3,500 were arrested according to antiracist legal team (national) and the legal team in Marseille has been giving updates - including one person accused of stealing a can given 10 months of prison.

I am delighted to have come across a German-language review of our #book on #revolts & #violence in #earlymodern visual cultures. The author has raised interesting questions for discussion & further #research. @DavidRdeBoer @BrillPublishing
