'Our Lives: Our Sea Forest
7.30pm, BBC One
Hopeful environmental stories are few and far between these days, which makes this short film – about the recovery of a forest that was destroyed by – so special. It is hard not to feel emotional as Eric Smith, a 74-year-old recalls the “garden of Eden” he helped to with his daughter, restoring a vital marine Hollie Richardson'

Transition citizens scientists have found one of Britain’s rarest bats, the Barbastrelle. 🦇

Transition Woodbridge has been helping their community to monitor local bats, putting up 190 detectors in gardens, care home grounds and at the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo. University of Suffolk researchers are using the audio recordings gathered to learn about the health of local eco-systems and how to protect bats' roosts.

Jane Healey (pictured in action) from the group said: "It's nice for people to feel they are contributing to the national or international picture, even though it seems like 'just my garden'.

"I have all sorts of conversations about it. Having had the Covid pandemic there's still a wish to be a community, so it's real 'citizen science'.”

The rare bat was one of 10 bat species found, and it’s helping to generate more interest locally on how to protect roosts, insect populations and the habitats bats rely on.

Over and over we get these wake up calls to stop doing life the way we have always done it. Stop with the extravagant vacations, flying anywhere we want anytime we think of it, stop the environmental abuse of clear cutting because the government allows it, making too much, doing too much, using too much..
The Burning Man thing is just a tiny subplot in the big picture of where humans started a neat little thing, then let it grow out of all proportion and sense. Cutting a few trees to build your own home then cleat cutting a mountainside to pad your bank account. Using a water source for your community then being compelled to sell millions of litres to bottled water companies to make share holders rich.
A huge city in the middle of the desert lit up all night so it shows from space. It would take days to list all the examples. The point is, it is long past time for humans to pull back and find ways to live with less energy.
We don't need all this huge extravagance to live full and satisfying lives. We need to see our grandchildren thrive. We need nature to flourish. We need hope for the future. This is all within our grasp if we knock off the bullshit. It starts with each one of us to stop waiting for the next guy to live with less and set good examples. And preaching to the choir on here as you all seem to understand and agree. But I guess we need to keep spreading the knowledge, ways and means.

@sco7sbhoy I am in favour of the idea, thought that web site based pamphlet is a silly way to present it.

The project does not have a large web presence: treesforlife.org.uk/about-us/l

I think this would be a lot easier to persuade the public of than reintroducing wolves, which I also am in favour of (rewildingbritain.org.uk/reintr )

Meet the Sheep!

In order to mitigate & biodiversity loss, globally, we need to vastly reduce over grazing so as to the land.

But, if you try to explain to sheep the scientific evidence of why we must restore ecosystems, for various psychological reasons they don't listen.

Going by what they "baa!", don't understand that vegetation such as woodlands sequester CO2, whilst sheep generally emit methane & prevent tree growth.

I'm a cradle . I did all the stuff (Baptism, Fist Communion, Confirmation) as a wee lad. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. I explored other faiths, , , , and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the Fathers and early church history. Entering the , I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to and the , sometimes called the . That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the . I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.

Lately, as I watch the world crumble around us, I can't shake the *fact* that robber-barons and the free market hired out "hunters" to exterminate the buffalo from north america in the immediate aftermath of the civil war, some 150 years ago. We will never recover from this vile act of "manifest destiny", even though the buffalo very well may. But it gives context to our current miseries with right wing fanatics, a bought and paid for Supreme Court and our planet in flames. We did this.

It is true that the Devil's Dyke in Cambridgeshire has some . The Pasqueflower we were lucky enough to catch in bloom are beautiful. But there were so few.
Intentionally grazed by sheep to maintain the chalk grassland, it seems you don't need many of them to reduce it to bare, nibbled grass. Maybe they need active, traditional shepherding for sheep grazing to actually work. To my untrained eye, there was nothing much left.

Highly recommend Tenacious Beasts by Christopher J. Preston. He does a masterful job of weaving together several lines of conservation thinking. Good pace with engaging stories. Particularly like the debate between natural regeneration and human intervention.

I met this beautiful green snake in our backyard yesterday. Nature needs our help. With over 8 billion people on our planet and loss of habitat for so many creatures, they have nowhere to go. Please your yard to help your local wildlife!

The leaf mold and eggshells are available. The amendments in the book are going to help the apple trees too. The forecast overnight temperatures are below freezing yet. Thank you. , , .
