“We want none of your slum prudery here, young woman. You've got to learn to behave like a duchess. Take her away, Mrs. Pearce.”

#Bales2023FilmChallenge August 26: a movie that goes the extra mile for #NationalSparkTheWorldDay
Like Rome, #Cleopatra (1963) wasn't built in a day. #JosephLMankiewicz's epic studio breaker took six years to make and, despite it being the highest-grossing film of 1963, didn't break even until 1973. Was it a #flop? A classic flop but a flop nevertheless? 𓃦 https://write.underworld.fr/settima/cleopatra-1963

Midnight Lace is a 1960 Ross Hunter-produced US crime film set in London which gave Doris Day her last, and best, serious dramatic role. It's almost a proto-giallo, but with echoes of GASLIGHT. A top-notch mystery/suspense/psychological thriller.

The Honey Pot (1967) - 1/4 - Is it a sex comedy? Is it a murder mystery? Why, halfway into the film, have we suddenly started using voice-over? Drawing from a hodgepodge of source material (Mr. Fox of Venice, The Evil of the Day, and Volpone), this film is confused about what it is or should be. Other than some decent performances from its ensemble cast, particularly #MaggieSmith and #RexHarrison, there isn’t too much to recommend this one.

One of my favourite movie moments.
Eliza Doolittle, on the stairs, in that dress.
