Can you imagine living such an unexamined life that you can see other people as objects, aligning yourself at least tangentially with ideology that believes in rigid and cruel punishment -- and then being surprised by the treatment you receive in a prison run by authoritarians?

He's trying to appeal for compassion because he knows normal people have it and he wants to manipulate it. There will be people who will oblige. (And this is likely morally correct, in spite of the irony.)

It feels impossible to accept sometimes how narcissistic a person can be, and how effective their performative certainty of their own exceptionalism is in attracting the desperate.
