We travel 7 miles north-west by road to Portpatrick, a stunningly attractive village wrapped around a fascinating harbour. Portpatrick is nearly as far west as you can go in southern Scotland, and nearly as far south as you can go in western Scotland. Thirteen miles north by road is Kirkmadrine Church, whose glass-fronted porch is home to the Kirkmadrine Stones, a collection of the oldest known Christian monuments in Scotland outside Whithorn.
