Sowbread, Cyclamen hederifolium, is native from southern France to western Turkey, Mediterranean islands, farther north in Europe and in the Pacific Northwest.
In the wild flowers appear well before the foliage (seen here). Leaves resemble Hedera ivy leaves and so the plant is commonly called the ivy-leaved cyclamen.

This stunning flower is a Ginger Lily.
Hedychium densiflorum has seven-inch long terminal racemes of fragrant, deep orange “orchid-like” flowers in late summer.

Spiraea japonica is also known as Japanese meadowsweet. It’s a member of the Rose family, Rosaceae, and has many striking varieties. This is my favorite!

Lacecap hydrangeas are flat on top with frilly edges. They are a “big hydrangea,” origin Japan, and are in full bloom this week in the #RhodyGarden.

🌈 Iris = Greek for rainbow! 🌈
My mother grew masses of bearded iris but I prefer these wild, beardless iris growing in exuberant clumps.
According to US Forest Service, unlike most flowering plants, iris has a superpower: both leaf surfaces of the iris can absorb light to provide the energy to photosynthesize and produce food for the plant that is stored in its rhizomes.

The rhododendrons are starting to come on at the #RhodyGarden!
The state flower of Washington is the Pacific rhododendron, R. macrophyllum, which means “rose tree with large leaves.”

Rhododendron comes from the ancient Greek ῥόδον rhódon "rose" and δένδρον déndron "tree". Larger rhododendrons like these are pruned to encourage a tree-like form. I find rhododendron trees with wavy trunks like these aesthetically pleasing. The small copse of straight bamboo on the left lends contrast.

Western Hemlocks, Tsuga heterophylla, have tiny cones, < 1 inch/2.54 cm. The Northwest US native trees are LARGE, can be > 100 feet/30.48 m height & > 30 feet/9.14 m width. They have lacy, evergreen foliage of soft, flattened needles.
These tiny cones belong to the forest floor at the #RhodyGarden. I like to collect them on private property to make holiday tree decorations for my living Norfolk Pine.

@GPJohnston Yes. I became a member of the #RhodyGarden after visiting 10 years. It’s worth talking about and visiting or following. They have an IG account, same handle.
@MelodyWainscott how are the rhodes?

I cannot believe moss is this green, but it is!
I took this on my daily walk on Sunday at Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden just south of Seattle, the world’s largest rhododendron collection and bonus: it’s in a PNW forest!
I’m going to be walking there, daily, to witness the bloom in 2023 and will be sharing it with you using #RhodyGarden.
You can find out more about the collection at rhodygarden.org
If you like it please share/boost it!
