What used to be a grow-your-own veggie patch is now a building site as the extension gets underway. The fruit trees at the back are intact. But the only veg to have given us food this summer is the rhubarb - but is has been plentiful.

So #breakfast this morning was a square of ANZAC slice, topped with #rhubarb #blueberry compote that I made a couple of days ago, and greek yogurt mixed with maple syrup

I've got them planted up at my Grandad's in #Penrith (in the #LakeDistrict)

Theoretically there's two different types ("Victoria" and "Champagne") but my mum very kindly potted them on and mixed them all up in the process so... 🤷‍♂️🥲

1. My dear Mum, 78, who did not answer text or phone today, was very alive when we checked on her. She just didn't have her usual knee pain, and used the pain free day to switch rooms. With YouTube loudly accompanying her.

It's delicious and I'll definitely be making it again. I'd use less sugar next time, maybe 3/4 cup instead of a full cup. (Easy to add more, very difficult to subtract.) I used pulverized freeze-dried strawberries in place of the food coloring; I don't think they worked very well but the color is just fine. Nothing says it has to be pink.

The technique for juicing rhubarb is brilliant, and I made it even better by squeezing out the rhubarb slurry in cheesecloth. I'm going to use that trick for a batch of rhubarb ice cream with chunked-up strawberries next.

Rhubarb leaves are toxic, but we would need to eat about 5kgs to reach a lethal dose of oxalic acid. Swiss chard has more oxalic acid in it! The actual culprit might be the anthraquinone glycosides. Still certain is that you will become very unwell if you eat them.
