Today in Labor History June 5, 1919: Richard Scarry was born. Scarry wrote and illustrated humorous children’s books with elaborate scenes of anthropomorphized animals. Some of his recurring characters were Lowly Worm, Huckle Cat, Mistress Mouse the tow truck driver, Wild Bill Hiccup, Gold Bug and Dingo the reckless driver. His fictional world, Busy Town, is characterized by a strong sense of community and mutual aid. Over the years, he revised his stories in an attempt to eliminate racial and gender stereotypes.

It’s interesting to see how early changes to classic books started to happen to make them more inclusive.

The Richard Scarry book “Cars and Trucks” originally published in 1951 was updated in 1979 to remove traditional domestic roles on a camping trip and to remove the kids playing “Cowboys and Indians.”

What’s weird, though, is that Scarry himself didn’t draw the changes (like he would in later books).

Nell'edizione di quando ero bimbo delle filastrocche di #RichardScarry, diceva "comare mucca"; ora "signora mucca". La mucca avrà preteso il "signora" (presto "#signor"!) ignorando cosa significhi "comare" e non vedendo in un libro per bimbi l'occasione per imparare parole nuove.
