@ChrisHardie @brb This is the relative Walk Potential of . Lighter= more categories of amenities nearby to walk to. Useful for example to estimate where a sidewalk would be more likely to be used if built or repaired. Darker=more car dependent.

In 1898, the League of American Wheelman (cyclists) donated the first ambulance to Reid Hospital, in Richmond, Indiana. It was horse-drawn and and later replaced with motorized ambulance built in the same town.

newspapers.com/article/palladi

100 years later, there were “No Bikes” signs on Main Street, no bike racks downtown and no bike lanes.

Thankfully, there’s been progress in the last 25 years to make safer & more accessible for cycling.

Thx @morgan for finding this!

@markstos I have a newspapers.com account, that's how I find most of the stuff. I wasn't sure where was, but I searched for:

"league of american wheelmen" "reid hospital"

And it was one of the first results.

In we have between 8-12% of households without a car. Yet we will do very little to help them get to places safely and efficiently that does not include having a car.

The non-advice of my car-free mentor

I was nervous about giving up my car in Richmond, Indiana and heard that Wayne had been car-free for ten years. I invited him out to lunch to hear about his experiences.

He accepted, but his experiences weren't what I expected.

How I got bike lanes into the City's transportation plan:

1. Buy measuring wheel on eBay
2. Find streets wide enough for bike lanes & just need re-painted
3. Make my own map of proposed routes with bike lanes
4. Publish map as "BIke Richmond" ($10 to register bikerichmond.org).
5. Share map with City's consultants, who add "Bike Richmond's recommended bike lanes" into long term plan.

Start your own bike lane planning:

Biking through a drive-through feels awkward every single time.

But not awkward enough to spend $800/month on a car.

@benfulton No, I was around later in when they ripped it out and put the road back. Business improved after that, at least for a time.

Same pattern happened in Frankfort, Kentucky where I was from. They also tried a downtown pedestrian mall, which nearly killed that street too. They restored the street and things improved again.

This odd looking symmetric was fast due the relatively aerodynamic shape.

The core of the frame is a custom bent car exhaust pipe.

The stoker has an independent drivetrain and doesn’t have to pedal in sync with the captain.

Also, plenty of cargo storage in the middle tucked into the wind envelope.

@brb @afterconnery How you like biking across the Chester Blvd bridge of the Whitewater River in ?

I proposed an alternate connection from Freeman Park to Oak Drive. Do you think that's still an interesting connection to advocate for?

COUCH HUNTING RULES:

1. Cruise alleyways to find abandoned furniture.
2. Tie down acquired furniture to bike trailer.
3. Proceed to city dump. Ride onto the scales and get your total weight. Subtract "tare weight" of the rider, bike and trailer to get your score for the trip.

Today, the total scale weight was 450 lbs and the score for this day was 150 lbs. (68 kg).

I used to hunt couches.

This was pre-kids And pre-bedbugs. I had a cargo trailer and time to kill. During the week I would spot junk couches abandoned in alleys, then go back on the weekends and haul them to the city dump, which was conveniently along fairly flat scenic route just outside of

But this turned out to be a fold-out couch full metal. 225 lbs. (102 kg). Strangers appeared just in time to help load and upload it!

Hey , if you've got dollars to spend on , you could do worse then improving walking conditions right across from an elementary school.

Here's a sketch that shortens crossing distances, extends sidewalks and fixes a crosswalk that currently dumps you on someone's lawn.

Here's the story of how I led the production of a city bike map when the city government wouldn't spend money on cyclist's safety.

Once produced, the tourism bureau gave the maps to visitors, the college gave them to freshman and the city eventually signed some of the routes and added to the network their system as official.

Wayne County, Indiana is offering a $5,000 offer for remote workers to move there. Home prices there are already below the national average.
