Recently I discovered (#RID) that #Mastodon's verifauxcation-by-link feature doesn't need a /visible/ link on the page being linked to from my profile.
The Settings UI gave me an <a rel="me" ...> link, but adding a <link rel="me" ...> in the <head> of the remote page also works.
