I talk a lot about the necessity of winter. Most of the spring ephemeral, forest understory, wetland, riparian, and tallgrass prairie seeds require cold stratification to germinate. This is one way native plants are outcompeted by non native plants. We are entering times in many forests where the cold gets deep with polar vortex, but not long enough to unlock the seeds. The loss of winter is a major hit to biodiversity and foodways.

The coming of big cold is something deeply anticipated by remote and northern communities. It's not just a time of story and play. But the ice and snow are necessary to expand the territory for trapping and ice fishing. Also, right now boat in communities are completely cut off until the ice is thick enough.
We need the winter. We need the cold.

I keep seeing southerners post things like they hate winter/cold and then give a list of reasons like bad sidewalks, isolation...
The destruction of winter is ecocide in Northern and remote communities and is anti Indigenous.
You don't hate winter, you hate à lack of infrastructure and community. You hate capitalism.

Sheila Watt-Cloutier coined the term #RightToBeCold and is a plenary speaker at the #RHRNClimate Summit. The Arctic is warming 3-4 times faster than anywhere on the planet. This is a urgent human rights issue. arctic.noaa.gov/Report-Card
