In #Ringworld , Larry Niven uses the Fleet of Worlds as a demonstration of a Klemperer rosette, which the reader is left believing is a long-term dynamically stable system, but it's not. Any slight instability will result in the collapse of the system.

Started listening to #Ringworld by Larry Niven. It's been pretty fun so far. I usually have a hard time adjusting to science fiction, but this one makes enough sense, so far, to not be a challenge. Still, trying to imagine alien races that feel truly alien is hard for my brain to do. We'll see how it goes, but I think it's going to be a fun listen. #bookstodon #books #sciencefiction

@rwhe @ttrpg My early #ttrpg gaming was dominated by @Chaosium’s games; my first game was #CallofCthulhu 2e (D&D was my second, but both of those only preceded #Traveller because it was OOP in the UK) #Pendragon, #Ringworld and #RuneQuest also got some serious play time. My favourite was #Stormbringer, either in 2e or Elric!/5e form.

The closest I get to #BRP these days is #DeltaGreen. I keep eyeing up Pendragon again, and also #FriaLigan’s #Dragonbane which is plumbing the same roots.

No General Products hulls in the new #BasicRoleplaying #UniversalGameEngine edition, alas, but we did get some spacecraft among other vehicles. If you're looking for #Ringworld goodies, both the new #BRP edition and previous edition (it turns out) have monofilament swords in the equipment chapter. Next time: Flashlight-lasers, anyone?

The new edition of #BasicRoleplaying includes rules for vehicles (it says here). I wonder if we'll see spacecraft, like, I dunno, General Products hulls with the serial numbers painted over (you can't file them off, of course) -- or any other borrowings from #Ringworld after #Chaosium lost the license.

Back in the 80s, licenses were a big thing. We're back there now, with so many games, but the 80s were something special.

#LarryNiven's #Ringworld was a #TTRPG from #Chaosium that presented the world of the novel and wider Known Space in a hefty boxed set using a variant of the #BRP system.

Great art and solid components. Books (188 pages) covering Explorer (characters), Tech, Creatures, and Ringworld, plus a Companion with more options. It has considerable collector value.

Lovely game.

Just had a realization for #ttrpg stuff #scifi : On planets, you take planes on relatively direct lines that follow the curve of the earth and let you cut over or under the poles to save time. But on a #ringworld , if you wanted to go east or west, you'd want to take a shuttle or spaceplane to "hop" out of the atmosphere and go directly towards your destination... 🤔 #ShowerThoughts

@avram Afterthought: I don't know how you feel about #GURPS, but if you *do* decide to resurrect #Ringworld, it's got to be easier to adapt it to GURPS than to sand all the worldbuilding off #Traveller first. GURPS is broadly similar to #BRP (skills-based, roll-under) but uses 3d6 instead of d100. However, you may have thought of all this already.

@rwhe My own #BRP experience kinda jumps from the 1980s (#RuneQuest, #Ringworld) just to CoC &e, skipping over decades of intermediate development.

My current ponderings are the result of unearthing my old copy of RIngworld and wondering if it would be worth playing.

Speculating because I’m looking up at that boxed #Ringworld set, rescued from my mother’s storage closet, currently perched on a shelf above my desk, and feeling *way* nostalgic.

But I so hate how #BRP makes you keep track of all those different success thresholds.
