As others mentioned, riot.im is the go to for the fediverse. However it doesn't have feature parity with something like WhatsApp. #riotim is not user friendly in terms of message encryption, is really just a lightly re-skinned #irc so since if the basics like message encryption or audio/video/picture sharing are poor add-ons if they're even available.

@mastik #matrix protocol and #riotim app would be a good federated solution. But, I'd wait a few weeks before jumping into that since they're rebranding #riot and adding additional features so you might have a better experience with on-boarding.

As for #signal it's my primary messenger. In my experience, it has feature parity with #whatsapp except for group management (can't remove someone from a group, no group admin). They've added a lot in the last year, what's missing for your friends?

@bignose spent a day looking for alternatives to #slack for workplace. Determined not to go down that route after we succumbed to #zoom for quality purposes.

Had used #riotim previously. Wanted to love it but honestly found it a bit clunky and worried non-devs wouldn't have the patience - and any credibility I had to push FOSS internally would be gone.

Luckily found #zulipchat Definitely recommend as a slick and user friendly #opensource alternative

Last night as I was helping someone with a new Linux installation, I ended up becoming extremely frustrated with the Matrix client Riot again.
Responsible password management was an ongoing theme throughout the evening, but we were making good progress until we hit a major stumbling block with the keys for an encrypted Riot channel.
There have been a few situations where using an encrypted Riot channel has made sense, but I still don't think it works well. To me, the system of keys, key backup, and "verfied devices" still seems confusing and not very efficient.

What am I missing?

Is there a good FAQ for handling firewalls with the #jitsi widget in #RiotIm running on #matrix?

For example, should (must) the person starting the jitsi widget be the person at a machine that is the least likely to have a strict intranet firewall? [My guess is "yes".]

What user settings (peer-to-peer and turn server) are best if firewall blocks are suspected for the jitsi widget for users inside of an intranet? and for users on the full internet with less strict firewalls?

Maybe you have suggestions for alternatives...

1) we are all in different countries so this is challenging (skype is doing OKish, but at least we can see/hear each other)

2) simplicity... not all of them are tech savvy (for example #jami might feel weird)

3) true #libre software would be a plus (seems like #wire is #opensource but not real #foss)

4) group video call encryption would also be a plus (afaik #riotim does not provide this)

Avoir un Nextcloud bien propre et un dossier d'upload publique.

Pour envoyer un fichier à, tu fais genre tu vas l'envoyer par WA mais tu envois un lien de partage par SMS. Tous les smartphones modernes affichent un aperçu sympa.

Pour recevoir, tu fait un alias genre touha.me/public qui redirige sur un dossier public de ton #Nextcloud et le gens y déposent leurs fichiers.

Pour le reste tu leurs dit que WA est de la merde est que #RiotIm est le future !
