The North Woodside Flint Mill on the Kelvin Walkway in Glasgow.

Dating from the 1700s, this water-powered mill served a number of different functions over the years, including milling chalk to extract flint nodules.

While it's now ruined, much of it is still visible, including the remains of a giant kiln, which can be seen in the background of this image.

The mill stones in the foreground were brought to this site from elsewhere.

This bridge was replaced by the new Queen Margaret Bridge (on what is now Queen Margaret Drive) in the 1920s and much of it was demolished in the 1970s, leaving just the stone piers on which it rested.

The remains of the original Queen Margaret Bridge over the River Kelvin in Glasgow. This cast iron bridge was built in 1870 by John Ewing Walker to provide access between the new neighbourhood of Kelvinside (now referred to as North Kelvinside) which he was developing and the main thoroughfare of Great Western Road on the other side of rhe Kelvin.

Female goosander with her chicks I encountered this afternoon on the River Kelvin in Glasgow. I love the way she lets them ride on her back.

This was only one of a number of weirs along the Kelvin which provided power and water to a variety of different industries.

The weir for the North Woodside Flint Mill on the River Kelvin in Glasgow.

Built in 1846, the weir created a pool reaching up as far as Ha'penny Bridge. Water was drawn from this pool along a shallow channel before it passed through a tunnel under the mill and back into the Kelvin. A wheel reached down into this tunnel and was turned by the water flowing underneath to provide power for the mill.

The remains of an old railway bridge over the River Kelvin just east of the Kelvin Aquaduct in Maryhill, Glasgow.

This bridge would have originally carried the Caledonian Railway line coming from Anniesland and heading east to eventually join up with the section of line which ran under the Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park on its way to the city centre.

The Kelvin Aquaduct in Maryhill. Opened in 1790, it carries the Forth and Clyde Canal over the River Kelvin. It was designed by Robert Whitworth, and at 136 metres long and 19 metres high, it was the biggest aquaduct in Britain at that time it was built

Janefield Cottage, 49 Otago Street, Glasgow.

Overlooking the River Kelvin and dating from around 1840, this villa is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Hillhead. The style is Cottage Orné (decorative cottage) created as part of the Romantic Movement of the late 18th and early 19th Century, and it is a very uncommon style in Scotland. It is thought to have been designed by John Brash.
