There has been a mill on the site since the 16th century. The present mill dates from the 18th century and is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. It was used commercially until 1959, and it produced oatmeal. The River Tyne still drives the water wheel, and the machinery can still be seen at work by visitors taking part in a tour. There is also an exhibition about milling, and a mill pond.

Fog on the Tyne: I popped down to the local marina to see about resuming an arrangement to launch my kayak there.
It changed hands recently and, as I walked towards the office, I could see it was all looking a bit tired.
I spoke to one of the new chaps. No, I can no longer kayak from the marina. Perhaps one day but not now.
That's a great disappointment to me as the river’s one of my favourite places to paddle. Still, it looked majestic as ever.

An ariel view of the River Tyne in 1935, Hebburn to the right, Walker to the right. Today, the view is very different. Housing occupies much of the Riverside, only on the north bank is there any industry alive. If Brexit was to work in the North East, massive investment needs to be made to end our dependency upon imports.
