#TodayinHistory in 1887, José #Rizal's first novel, Noli Me Tángere, was published in Berlin, Germany. The book & its sequel, El Filibusterismo, both written in Spanish, inspired the Philippines to revolt against Spanish rule, culminating in the #PH Revolution of 1896. THREAD.
From #Rizal's #MiUltimoAdios:
"Ah que es hermoso caer por darte vuelo;
Morir por darte vida, morir bajo tu cielo..."
(Oh how beautiful to fall to give you flight,
To die to give you life, to die under your sky…)

Our Filipino hearts stand at half-mast. 🫡🇵🇭
The death sentence was confirmed on the 28th and read to #Rizal on the 29th. His mother Teodora Alonso, taking matters into her own hands, after meeting his son in his cell for the last time, pleaded w/ the Spanish Gov-Gen for his release. She was ignored. In his last 24 hours, #Rizal was hounded by priests who sought to have him take back all his anticlerical writings. A retraction statement was released, but its authenticity is in doubt.
With #PH Revolution vs. Spain breaking out in August 1896, José #Rizal, who was initially bound for Cuba to render his service as physician of the Spanish military, was forcibly returned to face trial for rebellion, sedition, & conspiracy. The trial was done in haste. Rizal denied the charges that he led the revolution, but in the defense stand stopped short of condemning it entirely, only that it was still premature.
#TodayinHistory in 1896, José Rizal was executed via a firing squad by order of the Spanish colonial government, at Bagumbayan (now #Rizal Park), #Manila #PH, at 7:03 am. The #Philippines commemorates this historic event as #RizalDay. THREAD.

A month before the promulgation of the Malolos Constitution of 1899 & the est. of the 1st #PH Republic, amidst the uneasy tension escalating bet. Filipino & American forces, the revolutionary government in Malolos decreed #onthisday #RizalDay every 30 Dec. The decree was penned by Apolinario Mabini, as Head of Government (equivalent to Prime Minister), & signed by Emilio Aguinaldo as President. It was an acknowledgment of the reverence of Filipinos on #Rizal even 2 years after his execution.

#TodayinHistory in 1898, the #PH Revolutionary Gov decreed the commemoration of #Rizal's martyrdom every December 30, the 1st instance it was officially memorialized. This debunks the notion that the "veneration" of Rizal was U.S.-sponsored. THREAD. #Kasaysayan #RizalDay #History

Two weeks prior to Polavieja's arrival, Blanco instructed juez intructor to begin #Rizal's trial "with all possible speed" (con la mayor actividad). Rizal's case was thus opened on 3 Dec. Soon, the case was declared ready for trial. #onthisday Polavieja, his gens Zappino, Lachambre, Cornel, Galbis, & reinforcements arrived. Promising to crush the revo by any means, he immediately endorsed the case to the Auditor General de Guerra as he set order to the chaos in the Spanish colonial admin.
#TodayinHistory in 1896, in the early months of the Philippine Revolution vs. Spain, & 2 wks into Jose Rizal's arraignment in Fort Santiago, Camilo García de Polavieja took the place of Ramon Blanco as Spanish Gov-Gen of #PH. Under his admin, #Rizal was executed. THREAD.
