Successive governments have avoided any actual investigation into whether this shipwreck poses a threat... it does, but no one in Govt has been bothered to find out.

For 83 years the RMS Niagara has been lying on the seafloor off Northland, slowly rusting. At some point the remaining heavy oil will leak from the wreck, very likely causing a major environmental disaster.

Experts over years have requested a survey to determine the extent of risk. Germany is willing to provide assistance, but Minister Kiri Allan says 'Nah!'
