In West Virginia, theoretical gores are marked with hatches, whereas in the neighboring state of Ohio, they use chevrons. Though I’ve travelled to several other states since becoming interested in highway infrastructure, I’ve only recently put two and two together and realized that West Virginia is actually the outlier in using hatches! Though the #MUTCD allows only either chevrons or no markings, the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Standard Detail TEM-1 (Detail A shown) explicitly calls for diagonal lines. #roadgeek #roadsign

What are strip maps? A strip map is a map of a strip of highway, usually an Interstate. They show the interchange configuration of different exits, as well as services and other landmarks. See the example image attached.

What happened to strip maps? They seemed to die out in the '90s. Are they of a bygone era in highway mapping? Would anyone find them useful today? I'm curious to hear from any Zoomers (Gen Z) if you find this type of map interesting or useful.

Ohio has made revisions to its Sign Designs & Markings Manual.

· Unfortunately, Clearview font has been removed from destination signs and the supplemental part of warning signs (W16-8P, W16-8P, E7-H1).
· Ohio state park logo will appear on state park signs (D7-H1c, D7-H1d).
· 2 new state byway signs have been added for the Lincoln Highway Historic Byway and the Big Darby Plains Scenic Byway signs (M8-H4s, M8-H4q).

I think that U.S. #Metric speed limit #Signs should have a red ring around the number, even though the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices says that the ring should be black.

It's still a #Regulatory sign with the red ring, and it would stand out a lot more.

In the latest edition of Arkansas Highways magazine (Summer 2022), I-412 has been designated a future Interstate corridor under the infrastructure bill that was passed earlier this year. The new corridor follows US 412 between I-35 in Oklahoma and I-49 in Northwestern Arkansas. High priority has been given to the section between #Tulsa and #Nashville.

I-412 doesn't fit the numbering convention of the #Interstate system.

Some common roadside #signs in #Pennsylvania.

The top sign has the highway number on the top row. The 4-digit secondary numbers are only unique within the county, which means many numbers repeat in other counties. They are called county quadrant routes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_State_Route_System

The bottom two lines have which section of highway it is. Each block of 10 is ½ mile, so this intersection is 1½ miles from its terminus in the Location Referencing System.
