Aussie 'business tool' a killer?
"Large SUVs reported to increase the risk of serious injury to other road users by a third more than medium SUVs. Road safety experts propose levy on large SUVs in city to curb rising Victorian road deaths"
"While financial disincentives have been shown to benefit road safety in Europe, Australia must first remove incentives encouraging the purchase of large SUV-type vehicles..More than 50% of new vehicles sold in Australia last year were SUVs...The signals the governments are giving people is that there is nothing wrong with larger cars."

Making Australa's wildlife extinct on the roads
“There has been an increase in reports of animals hit on the roads near ski resorts. Every day we are coming across deceased wildlife lying on our roads, hit by cars and left to die without being reported, moved, or even pouch checked. Dead animals like kangaroos and wombats can often have live young in their pouches that can survive for up to two weeks. If the pouch isn't checked they will often suffer a slow death due to starvation.”

Sehr schön das Wort #Roadkill. Man sollte wohl besser das deutsche Wort #Straßenmord verwenden.

Safety technology to slow down reckless drivers
In-Car Tech Would Force NYC’s Worst Drivers to Slow Down Under New Proposal
"Cars and trucks can act as weapons when used recklessly, and people who have repeatedly demonstrated they will endanger lives while operating vehicles should be limited in how fast they can drive."
"We are going to literally force you to slow down...Dangerous drivers with at least six speeding tickets in a single year would be forced to install speed-limiting devices in their vehicles under new state legislation."
"We know that the [technology] exits, we know that it works to slow down traffic, and now we are saying that we should apply this across the board to the worst of the worst drivers."

The NSW carnage:
"Each year, speeding contributes to about 41% of road fatalities and 24% of serious injuries. Almost 135 lives are lost and 1141 people are seriously injured."

Impact of Roads and Vehicles on Wildlife Populations
"With over one billion cars on the planet (OICA 2016), the global scale of wildlife roadkill is enormous. Estimates include anywhere between 89-340 million birds killed each year by cars in the US (Loss et al. 2014) and 29 million mammals per year in Europe (Grilo et al. 2020)"
"Estimates for Australia are limited but published studies have reported such figures as: over nine million kangaroos and wallabies struck on Australian roads each year (Burgin and Brainwood 2008); over 300 koalas killed annually on roads in southeast Queensland (QDES 2022); and over 40,000 frogs run over annually on one road in northern NSW (Goldingay and Taylor 2006)"

Here's a beetle I found squashed on the road on my bike ride to work today. It's the NZ endemic flightless Alexander beetle, Megadromus antarcticus.
Or, as AWS Transcribe called it in my audio note today, "make your dramas Antarctica's". Other times it's "major dramas antarctica's" and "Melodramas. Antarctica's". It's definitely a dramatic beetle.
It's a shame this one's dead.
Protecting Koalas through habitat restoration on private land
"A growing human population, particularly in areas along Australia’s east coast, has led to large-scale clearing of better-quality koala habitats with many koala populations struggling within smaller, fragmented patches of poorer quality habitat. Other threats, such as drought, fire, climate change, disease, vehicle strike and dog attack are further impacting koala populations."
"The North Coast Local Land Services "is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) from landowners interested in protecting key koala habitat in the Coffs Harbour and the northern section of Bellingen local government areas, a location identified as an Area of Regional Koala Significance (ARKS)."

“The road is a "death trap" for both people and koalas.
"The number of reported koala deaths on Heathcote Road had increased markedly in recent years. A large section of the road from the Princes Highway at Engadine through to Sandy Point near the Holsworthy Barracks was "known as a 'kill zone. With the most recent incidents, we now have a count of around 25 kills across the shire over a couple of generations of #koalas”

Road deaths ripple through Australia’s small towns
"In 2021, 1,116 people died on Australian roads. Of those, 65% were from regional and remote communities and more than 40% were aged between 17 and 39.
The Australian National University reported the estimated cost of a fatal crash between 2016 and 2020 to be $3.2m."
The provision of active and fossil fuel free infrastructure could reduce such a carnage. But no, it's always more roads!
