It may interest you to know this name is similar to "" used in butterfly names. I suspected this had something to do with "flitting" or "fritting" around, etc. But it turns out to be based on a Latin word for "dice box" as in "roll the dice", and must therefor be a reference to their spots! 🙂

Saved this for … One of my favorites!

Meet the Walking Fern… Seems to grow exclusively on exposed, damp . I saw an etching of it in an old naturalist book, and then one day looked down... and there it was!

I was exploring near a natural spring/waterfall and noticed it next to the trail. Once I knew what to look for I found several more clumps. Always on exposed rocks.
