In the old, old days of cycling cross country (it's a photo print, for a start), finding interesting looking routes on OS maps, I found this on the lane I intended to use. As I recall I carried on down it, too.

Was reminded of it seeing the new 20mph speed limits, and the matching 'end of speed limit' signs as we disappear down a tiny lane overhung by trees...

Anyone know more about these 'Plaque Michelin' road signs in France, and/or the type?

"At the end of World War I, he [André Michelin] started to produce distance markers and signs. His goal was to introduce simple, effective, and lasting signage.

"Nameplates were made of enameled lava while their bases were made of reinforced concrete... Michelin manufactured several thousand signs until the early 1970s."

In West Virginia, theoretical gores are marked with hatches, whereas in the neighboring state of Ohio, they use chevrons. Though I’ve travelled to several other states since becoming interested in highway infrastructure, I’ve only recently put two and two together and realized that West Virginia is actually the outlier in using hatches! Though the #MUTCD allows only either chevrons or no markings, the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Standard Detail TEM-1 (Detail A shown) explicitly calls for diagonal lines. #roadgeek #roadsign
