From the early days of Ted Tocks Covers, here is Cyndi Lauper’s famous cover of a Robert Hazard penned song. It was released 40 years ago today.
“I come home in the morning light
My mother says, "When you gonna live your life right?"
Oh, mamma, dear, we're not the fortunate ones
And girls—they wanna have fun
Oh, girls just wanna have fun”

"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" is a song made famous by #CyndiLauper four years after it was written by #RobertHazard. It was the first major single released by Lauper as a solo artist and the lead single from her debut #studioAlbum, #ShesSoUnusual (1983). Lauper's version gained recognition as a #feministAnthem and was promoted by a Grammy-winning music video. It has been covered, either as a studio recording or in a live performance.

TIL that #CindyLauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is a cover. 🤯 The original is from 1979 by #RobertHazard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aLNwOxPsjg

Sometimes a good cover doesn’t just bring fresh life to an old favorite - it takes a relatively obscure track and makes it a feminist anthem which still pops up everywhere 40 years later.
This track was arguably THE breakthrough track for Lauper, who deserves substantial credit for reworking some of the lyrics and reshaping the style so that anyone not paying attention could easily overlook the fact that these are the same basic song released only four years apart.

Tried to teach my spouse about #Philadelphia's 1980's music #TheHooters, and #RobertHazard's Escalator of Life. Was not impressed.
