The other classic example is that of Robert Moses, who amassed enough government power in the 1930s to 1960s that he was able to personally implement his anti-human urban planning agenda of replacing cities with exurbs and highways.

Moses was also deeply racist and designed bridges that were too low to accommodate buses to ensure that poor people of color, who might have lacked personal cars at the time, could not take public transportation to the beach.

Or that other monstrosity of High Modernism, Brasilia, Brazil’s planned capital city. It was designed without sidewalks or crosswalks, because its designers expected (and therefore commanded, by way of infrastructure) that everyone would just drive everywhere all the time.

How does our TSP designation of "Neighborhood Collector" fit with Taylors Ferry being basically just more freeway lanes? How about if it's also a City Bikeway but has no bike lanes or sidewalks? As for the $4B backlog: there's no way the net cost of this is less than a dollar per VMT. $30 dollars per minute for this intersection alone? 💸 the freeway plan lives on in our failure to manage surface-street traffic.

in doing like in did with appalling results. They really want to tear down buildings for a highway (Autobahn, like Interstate) THROUGH THE CITY. Germany's car-centric planning gets a renaissance - it is 1960 again.

On this date in #1888, ’s master builder, was born. His controversial legacy remains hotly debated more than 40 years after his death. Still, it’s hard to imagine modern without his parks, river crossings, and network of highways. Below is a photo of the - /RandallsIsland span of the his first bridge project. That’s my wife contemplating it at the lower left. Moses will be a regular figure in my toots

There’s a line in Straight Line Crazy where Robert Moses dismisses that the Washington Square Park roadway protests are basically just a bunch of women that reminded me what a great choice it was to write Maarva as the leader of the uprising on Ferrix. Maarva may not be like Jane Jacobs, but there’s something very real and powerful in writing a woman to lead a rebellion.
