Robert Plant - Manic Nirvana

The Robert Plant of Pictures at Eleven, The Principle of Moments and Shaken ‘n Stirred was restless and experimental, which resulted in some distinctly non-Zep albums.

With Now & Zen and this LP, he's clearly trying to modernize the harder Zep approach, and pivot in a more pop direction.

It's perfectly fine album, but given the riff-y approach, it makes me wish Bonzo & Jones were there to add some *groove* to the mechanical beats.

Robert Plant - Now and Zen

The Blunt era over, Phil Johnstone is now Plant's collaborator on keyboards - and this is definitely an 80s keys-heavy album. Apart from the track Jimmy Page solos on, guitar work is by Doug Boyle.

Lots of solid songs, very "commercial" sounding, quotes Led Zep - no Shaken 'n' Stirred experimentation. It's still a good album!

Background vocals by Toni Halliday again...and Kirsty MacColl! Plant knew how to pick vocalists...

These 80s Robert Plant albums are better than their reputation suggests. He was definitely making interesting choices, and working with a lot of talented people. Yes, they sound '80s (can't get away from those synths)...

In addition to Robbie Blunt, he brought in Little Feat's Richie Hayward on drums this time...and Toni Halliday of Curve on vocals!
