I’ve had a recent fascination with #RobertRyan. Can’t get enough of his films where he is almost always despicable, while in real life he was a liberal activist—I guess that’s acting. Watching The Wild Bunch (1969) today. #acting #OldHollywood

Despite Robert Ryan as Nemo, plus wild costume design, “Captain Nemo and the Underwater City” (1969) doesn’t have much to offer, alas.

The self-righteous anger and violence has been a staple pathos for the Western genre. This tough male victimhood is as privileged and outdated as white supremacy movement that is rampant in this country. One can't deny that America is built on violence but no one wants to admit it. All highly regarded Westerns follow pretty much the same pathos - The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, etc. #AndredeToth's Day of the Outlaw is no exception but it makes a hero out of #RobertRyan's Blaise, a gruffy rancher without ever firing a gun. So kudos for that. Day of the Outlaw concerns a band of outlaws rolling into a small town headed by principled Bruhn who’s dying from bullet wounds. Sensing Bruhn’s death will destroy the town by thirsty & lusty bandits, Blaise decides to not to be blasé and lure them into the mountains to their deaths. It’s one of the best westerns I’ve seen. #TinaLouise is a real beaut. Snowcapped vista also accentuates the harshness of the American west. #western

Hard hitting daylight noir setting is just a backdrop for a Nick Ray drama about loneliness. He is skillful setting Wilson up from the beginning as a family-less man on the brink of losing his soul. Ray knew back then, that the loneliness is a universal condition that affects everyone - a cop, screenwriter, disaffected youth... #OnDangerousGround is a subtle & quietly moving film except for the ending which succumbs to cliché. This is how I would've ended the film:
EXT. CAR - DAY
Wilson is speeding down the snow swept, empty highway. After a while, from the bird's eye view, we see his car slowly coming to a halt. Wilson sits there in the car for the longest time. Then he slowly gets out & closes the car door. It’s a barren wintry landscape. We pan three sixty and stop back at Wilson's face. His face conveys quiet determination. Cut to wide:
Wilson standing alone in the snow swept highway.
Eleanor Rigby starts to play & the credits roll.

3 things about Jean Renoir's THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH The Woman on the Beach [1947]
1. "Peg, you're so beautiful. So beautiful outside, so rotten inside."
2. The only thing he saves from the fire is his typewriter.
3. Coat of a ghost.

With a cool title sequence, rapid cuts, zoom-ins, extreme closeups, jazzy score and old New York scenery, there are a lot to love in Odds Against Tomorrow. It patiently spends 2/3rd of the film on the characters before the heist. #HarryBelafonte is mesmerizing as a conflicted anti-hero, so is #RobertRyan in his aging grizzly man persona. #GloriaGrahame shows up as saucy next door neighbor of Slater (Ryan) and their scene together is deliciously explosive. #robertwise #filmnoir

Robert Wise creates a smoke-filled, sleazy, unglamorous, two-bit boxing noir. Shot memorably by Milton Krasner, realistic fight scenes are crazy intense- no wonder Scorsese is a big fan of this. There’s joy and misery in meatballs battling it out where paying spectators chant "KILL HIM!" Ryan, looking like a hero from Bellows' painting, slogs through a hellish fight, then being subjected to the fury of the gang. Just how much of this can a man take? A great tight noir. #robertryan #filmnoir
