One of the ways it came up with is what my villain is doing, and I'm modifying things to include two elements it came up with in other ideas.

I had this piece of paper in my backpack on a hike, and it got a little messed up and muddy in the rain. I thought a sort of apocalyptic painting might be a good fit for it (hate to see it go to waste) and it gave me a chance to draw a robot.
I've been doing some electronics hobbying lately, so my robot has that capacitor look to it.
