A Robot With Expandable Appendages Could Explore Martian Caves And Cliffs

Rovers are great if you're exploring a smooth terrain, but what if you want to climb a cliff or descend into a lava tube? A recent NIAC grant was awarded to a team developing a crab-like robot with expendable arms and claws that could climb cliffs or descend into caves. Called "ReachBot," it can deploy appendages that can be secured to a rock wall, then pull itself up like a rock climber, maintaining three points of contact at all times. It won't be fast, but it could reach places no other rover could.
