@ajjison You are right, but these days buses and trains have USB sockets, so I always carry a 150cm USB A to C cable.

In all other aspects I totally agree with you: Device convergence is also suspicious to me, a proper optical zoom for the camera is just great and the battery of my iPod Mini (CF card, fresh battery as of 2018 and #Rockbox) is unbeatable.

I was really happy with the #Anbernic RG300, but the #RG3xx is even better. If you do not want to spend too much, go for the #Powkiddy Q90.

One of my favorite open source projects ever is Rockbox. It gives life to audio devices discarded by their manufacturers.

Huh people still use dedicated mp3 players. There's even open source firmware for them - see #rockbox

@ppatel @bw i've always had to repeatedly scroll. In #rockbox, which mostly support’s-physical button hardware to scroll, you can set acceleration in lists and hold down and glide through lists.
I've not heard that happen with a screen reader before.

I have a pair of Sandisk Sansa Fuze players. Picked them up cheap when they were being discontinued.
Native FLAC support in the stock OS, and it can dual-boot into #rockbox (which has better gapless playback).

It maxes out at something like 48k and 24 bit, so any higher definition lossless files need to be converted.

@lienrag @lcamtuf #rockbox is not linux, yet (if the display and CPU of the device you install it on permits) it can run doom.

Source: I played doom in rockbox on an iriver h320 in the late 2000s.

#easyeffects for #pipewire allows to do things to your audio input and output on your computer (if using pipewire; there's also pulseeffects for pulseaudio).

These things include: speech enhancement, echo cancellation, dynamic range compression, equalization and stereo crossfeed.

I'm now using the compressor, crossfeed and equalizer (auditory fatigue reduction) to emulate the behaviour of my #rockbox portable digital audio player. It's been great so far.

Wooo.... Almost gave up on my #ipod project (looking for a #minimalist way to listen to digital music without getting #distracted by my #phone) when I couldn't get my modded storage working with #rockbox. Luckily after sleeping on it I found someone who patched rockbox for mSATA back in 2018, so now I've got my almost dream music player.

If it continues to work well I may USB-C mod it and Bluetooth mod it, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to tackle the tiny SMD soldering.

Man what is going on with me... First I buy a Mac Mini (running #OpenBSD) and now I've bought an iPod. Granted it's a 5th gen classic that I'm modding with an msata drive and running #rockbox, but still. This thing sounds incredible; I thought I was just losing my hearing with age.

Why an ipod? Like everyone else I'm trying to reduce my distractions. If I don't need my tracking device, no need to use it. I like having a tactile interface instead of everything being a touchscreen, too.

Moral of the story: Apple can make hardware if they try. Imagine where we'd be if they weren't so darn anticompetitive.

Si y'a bien un seul produit Apple que j'ai adoré, c'est l'iPod. Surtout avec Rockbox. À l'époque, un baladeur MP3 de 40 Gb, c'était oufisime.

wondering about other (cheaper) feasible options for #Rockbox than an iPod that @mardabx would want me to get found. A major want is a quality DAC. Spotify is a good tradeoff for both having my phone wireless and not using the shitty DAC that the Xiaomi/Redmi like mine have.
