8 years of summer heatwaves, in the Alps, are resulting in shrinking 800 to 4,500 year old permafrost and consequent increase in rockfalls. ย The mountains are starting to crumble.
The unusual accessibility of Swiss mountains, most notably Mont Blanc, plus early warning signs from late 90s, that were not ignored, have led to an impressive understanding of what's happening... and it's not good.

H/T @drewbrayshaw@twitter.com for the alert, but there has been a pretty sizeable #rockfall on #SnowpatchSpire in the #Bugaboos that has destroyed some popular climbing routes. The #landslide appears to have happened today or maybe late yesterday, based on available #satellite imagery, and crashed onto the #glacier below. No recorded #earthquakes that could have triggered the failure.

Scenes from the North Cascades. I saw the marmot moving through the grass north of Glacier Peak, and the fat pika calmly regarded me from the rockfall at Hopkins Pass five miles south of the Canadian border last September.
